Blackmouth

Fishing Dictionary->Blackmouth

The term “Blackmouth” originally referred to immature Chinook Salmon that had yet to migrate to the Pacific Ocean. Over time, it has come to be used more broadly to describe any Chinook Salmon, due to the black pigment along their gum line and the predominantly dark coloration of their mouths.

Chinook Salmon, the largest of the Pacific Ocean salmon species, typically become sexually mature and enter freshwater rivers, streams, and creeks annually to spawn. A trophy-sized Chinook Salmon will provide a rigorous test for your tackle and gear, often necessitating drag replacements on reels after several catches due to the sheer power of this species.

Anglers should ensure that their equipment is in top-notch condition before targeting Chinook Salmon. This includes checking your line, lures, rod guides, and drag washers on your reels, as many a trophy has been lost to faulty gear. Proper preparation can make the difference between landing a prized catch and telling a story about the one that got away.
